EMERGENCY RELIEF SERVICES IN UTTRAKHAND

Uttarakhand is in bad shape with the floods, that were triggered by heavy pre-monsoon rains over a week ago, has left the hilly region devastated. The death toll was reported to be 1,000, with several more missing and more than 60,000 tourists and pilgrims stranded. The deluge has also swept away buildings and homes and destroyed major roads, bridges and vast tracts of farmland. The death toll is expected to rise significantly. The flood struck at the time when tens of thousands of people were making pilgrimage to the four holy places in Uttarakhand. People are trapped in interior areas like Kedarnath, Badrinath, Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Devprayag, Pithoragarh, Srinagar, Uttarkashi, and Rishikesh etc.
Although ArmyAir ForceNavyIndo-Tibetan Border PoliceBorder Security ForceNational Disaster Response ForcePublic Works Department and local administrations are working together for quick rescue operations, but there is a need for more relief work. Authorities are now also suspecting contamination of water resources in the area due to hundreds of decaying bodies spread across the valley. The destruction is so large that, handling and rescue operation is still a challenge. Reuters say that this devastation has led Uttarakhand back by 3 years.
While being thankful to the several Government and Non – Government agencies in rescue action, Navjyoti Development Society, has also joined hands with Save the Children (India) and has started emergency relief services. Presently, we are doing the relief work in three districts namely :

  • 10 villages in Uttarkashi,
  • 2 villages in Dehradun and
  • 2 villages in Tehri

The activity being distribution of dry food packets with bottles of mineral water, blankets, warm clothes, mats and torch etc. We are working  to reach approximately 5000 people and covering around 15 locations all over Uttarakhand. We are receiving phone calls from several sources to meet the needs of the people, in whatever possible way.
We are looking forward to other agencies and individuals who have similar interests and welcome them to join hands with us to contribute towards this relief operation to cover up other affected areas.
